It will only take us a few minutes to escape the rush of the city and, within an hour and a half, you will arrive at our first hotel. The El Silencio Lodge (www.elsilenciolodge.com), surrounded by the lush green of the cloud forest, is located in the central volcanic mountain range on the slopes of the Poás volcano and offers 16 luxury mountain suites, a unique spa, and a fine restaurant. The hotels “eco-concierges” are responsible for your well-being and personalized service. Please note that due to the remoteness of this area and unpredictable weather conditions, arrivals at the El Silencio Lodge before 6:00 p.m. are recommended.

2nd day Get in touch with Mother Nature (El Silencio Lodge)

Wake up to the sounds of nature. As they say, the early bird catches the worm – you can opt to get up early and observe the awakening of the day. Bajos del Toro is home to over 350 species of birds and getting up early has its rewards, such as the morning freshness. Your personal guide will take you on a hike through nature today. You will follow the “Mystical Trail” through the cloud forest to “La Melodía Waterfall”, named for the harmonic convergence of bird calls. The return hike will challenge your keen senses as you try to follow the tracks of forest critters including coatis, raccoons, and tepezcuintles (lowland pacas). In the afternoon you will visit the village of Bajos del Toro. The tour leads you to the cultural hearts of the township like the church, the school, and the soccer field and you will get to know some of their special inhabitants. The “Pulperia” (which means mom-and-pop grocery store) of Doña Olga could be classified as a communal center too as she does not only sell groceries. She is also famous for her old-styled pastries and fresh tortillas. If you like you can palm your own one. And there is Don Martin Porras, an enthusiastic orchid lover, and collector of around 400 different species. He will be pleased to show you around in his garden exhibition which features even funny shoe-shaped specimens and tiny little ones. Armed with a magnifying glass you won´t miss the smallest details of the orchid safari. Later a 90-minute “Poás Healing Stone Massage” at the hotel spa is planned. In the evening, enjoy dinner at the lodge.
